Laurelei Black

CANCELLED - Gullywasher: A Wee Torrent of Water Witchery in the Ozarks and Appalachias

The ways of the hillfolk in the eastern United States often seem obscure and superstitious to others. Poor, fiercely independent, proudly, private, and thriftily adaptive Scots-Irish and Palatinate German immigrants took readily to the hills of the Appalachias and Ozarks where they often traded with, learned from, and married indigenous folk who were already living closely with the land. These two mountain systems  feature cultures that share a great deal of common customs around healing, foodways, art, music, and folklore, all of which are blends of practices that become something uniquely American. Laurelei Black has lived  in the foothills of the Appalachias or in the Ozarks most of her life. Her ancestors have been in the hills for generations. With yarb doctors, water-dowsers, bee charmers, and grannies aplenty, the magic of this area often calls itself by terms less alarming than “witchery,” but still bearing similarities with witchcraft in both means and ends. Let’s explore together the bits and bursts of this branch of American folk magick as it relates to water.

Workshop: Creek Magic

Creeks, those magical waterways that wind through mountains, neighborhoods, and farmlands, can sometimes be overlooked. The definition of a creek is that it is a minor tributary of a river. We tend to overlook creeks as they burble over rocks or placidly glide through forests. Yet we can also be startled when creeks majestically swell after a storm, sometimes causing havoc in their wake. Lisa Wagoner is the neighborhood Water Priestess of her own neighborhood's creek, and has a long history and a personal relationship with this particular type of waterway. This relationship goes all the way back to childhood, when she lived in Austria during her formative years. Utilizing folk magic and water priestess rituals, she will offer ways to work with, honor and appreciate these small yet mighty waterways.

Bio: Lisa Wagoner is a writer, the author of Positive Pagan: Staying in an Offbeat World by Llewellyn, and the co-host of the podcast Mystic Tea. She is a certified Reiki Master in Usui and Celtic traditions, an emerging herbalist, a water priestess, and the owner of Aligned Alchemy Center, where she works with clients on manifesting/magical challenges, purpose clarifications, healing work, and more.

Workshop: Scrying with Colored Water

Scrying is the divinatory art of entranced gazing through a reflective surface; such as water or a mirror, for the purpose of ‘seeing’ that which is yet to be, or hidden…the unknown. In the beginning, it is often difficult to make out images and/or trust oneself, as the subtleties of water take time to reveal themselves. We can make this process easier by adding color to our water in the form of food coloring. We will begin the workshop by connecting with the water using hand movements and sound, allowing us to soften our gaze and open our minds, followed by active scrying/gazing. YOU WILL NEED- a clear glass or stainless-steel mixing bowl, Water to fill the bowl, 2-3 colors of food coloring (I recommend buying organic food coloring at the health food store as the dyes are safer for you and the water. Your journal of Book of Shadows & a pen
